My last semester of college, I participated in Semester at Sea. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I saw and learned so much. One of the lessons that keeps popping in my head lately is a catch-phrase. One of our professors began every lecture with, “Where is your attention?” At the time, I think most of us thought it was a bit cheesy. But almost fifteen years have passed since that experience, and it’s one of the few things I remember like it was yesterday.
It’s one of those annoying lessons, the kind of thing that your parents drive you crazy with and then years later you’re glad you learned it. How many times have you realized that you aren’t making strides towards your goals because you aren’t paying attention to them? Where is your attention? Is it on those things that you want out of life? Or have you been side-tracked?
Getting back on track is often as easy as making yourself answer that question. When you purchase something, where is your attention? Do you already have that item? Would it be easy to find that item for less? Or borrow it? Are you making the purchase with intention or laziness? So next time you find yourself off-track, ask yourself, “Where is your attention?” You might be surprised what you learn.
