I am a faithful reader of Kendi Everyday. I love her fashion sense. And even more than that, I love how she re-mixes the pieces of her wardrobe to create new outfits. She recently did a series on creating a working closet. Since then, I have tried to be more conscious of purchasing pieces that I can wear in a multitude of ways. There are two items that I have wanted to add to my wardrobe. Both are pieces that would be very re-mixable, a pair of black skinny pants and a black cami (I have one but it’s seen better days). I heard that Gap was having a pretty good sale so I went on their website to see if I could find either of these pieces. I found both!
Both items were already marked down. The pants were priced at $39.50, marked down from $49.50. And the cami was $14.50 marked down from $19.50. The first thing I did to get an even better deal was to click through from BigCrumbs.com. Big Crumbs offers up to 3.2% cash back at Gap. I am a frequent Gap/Old Navy shopper, so a few years ago I decided that it was worth it to get a Gap Card. I pay this off every month. If you cannot be disciplined enough to pay it off every month then a store card is not for you – the interest rate is outrageous. Because I have a Silver Card (yes I spent that much at Gap in one year) I get free shipping. So I entered the code for free shipping (SILVER). On the front page of the Gap site they were advertising a 20% off deal. I entered that code. But I decided to double check to be sure that wasn’t an even better code. I’m glad I did. RetailMeNot had a code for 25% off.
I try to use my Discover Card for most of my purchases. I also pay this off every month. With the Discover Card I can either get Cash Back or use the rewards to “purchase” gift cards. Many of these cards are a better deal than the cash. I can get a $25 Gap gift card with $20 worth of rewards. They offer an electronic gift card so it can be used immediately – no waiting for a gift card to arrive in the mail. I applied my $25 gift card which brought my total down to $18.89. With the BigCrumbs cash back I will receive $1.30 cash back. $1.30 may not sound like much, but I fully believe in the Ben Franklin, a penny saved is a penny earned, philosophy. Just think how much money you would have if you saved $1.30 on every purchase you ever made.
If I had just gone to Gap, put the items in my cart and purchased them without using any of these money saving techniques the two items would have cost $58.52 (with tax). I paid $18.89 (also with tax), a difference of $39.63.
