Due to all the rain we’ve had, the garden looks especially green. My goal this year was to grow everything from seed. That hasn’t worked out quite like I’d hoped. In the past I haven’t had much luck starting seed in my kitchen window, my Aerogarden has been a lot more successful. But, since my Aerogarden is only a three pod, it hasn’t been a very fast process. I have been taking cuttings from various plants to attempt to propagate new ones.
Sweet Potato Vine
Propagating most plants is incredibly simple to do. All that’s required is a small cutting and some water; remove any leaves from the lower part of the stem and submerge it in water. In a matter of days it should begin to root. Once the roots are established it’s ready to plant. This process is perfect for vines, like sweet potato vine and English Ivy. The sweet potato vine is doing really well; it’s ready to plant.
Cuttings from Various Plants
The cuttings pictured above are from a wide variety of plants; even if they don’t root, I’m enjoying the pretty arrangement. There is some creeping jenny, callie calibrachoa, trailing periwinkle and spirea. I have successfully propagated creeping jenny, but have never tried any of the others. I doubt the spirea will propagate in this manner, but it looked so pretty with the others, I had to add it to the arrangement.
Memorial Box
I had intended to plant memorial boxes, to take to the cemetery, using plants I started from seed. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough mature plants by Memorial Day so I had to purchase most of the plants. I think next year I will invest in a larger Aerogarden and Garden Starter System and begin a little sooner. I’m also going to attempt to over-winter some of my plants indoors. We’ll see how that experiment goes.
Candy Corn Plant
I really need to stay away from the garden centers. There are too many temptations. A few weeks ago when I was at Ace Hardware I came across this really cool candy corn plant and couldn’t resist. I should be able to take cuttings from it and bring it indoors over the winter so I can plant it again next year.
Potatoes
My potato plants have really taken off. They are a lot taller than the container I purchased; the Smart Pot has not held up as well as I’d hoped. I suspect that one of the dogs or possibly another critter tore into it. I think next year I’m going to attempt something like this so I can continue to add dirt as the plants grow and harvest them periodically from the bottom.
Blueberry Bush
The blueberry bush is pretty funny looking. I’m not sure what to do with it. I don’t have high hopes that it will produce any blueberries.
