Reading… Where the Crawdads Sing. It took me a little while to get into this book but when I did, I couldn’t put it down. It’s the story of Kya, a girl (around 6 years old at the time the story commences) whose entire family, one by one, abandons her, leaving her to fend for herself in the family’s shack in a North Carolina marsh. It alternates between two timelines: one focussing on Kya growing up, the other involves the investigation of a mysterious death.
Watching… The Masters. Golf is generally part of my weekend soundtrack. It’s so calming and soothing – perfect for weekend naps or even reading or working. Occasionally the weekend’s tournament is interesting enough to capture my attention. This weekend was one of those weekends. I usually root for fellow Cowboy, Rickie Fowler, but since he was never quite pulled to the front, I rooted for Tiger Woods. In addition to loving a good comeback story, we are the same age so I’ve always kind of thought of him as a classmate.
Listening to… Root of Evil podcast. My dentist and her staff are big fans of true crime podcasts and gave me a list of new-to-me podcasts, including this one, on my last visit. It’s narrated by the granddaughters of the man believed to be the killer of the Black Dahlia. It is incredibly disturbing how messed up this family is and also amazing that the current generations seem to be normal people.
Doing… a smartphone fast. After reading Digital Minimalism and How to Break Up with Your Phone, I’ve been intending to do a 24 hour smartphone fast. I did that this weekend. I put my phone in my bedside table and did not touch it for over 24 hours. I did use my iPad on a limited basis, and did not use social media of any kind during that time. It definitely has me reconsidering how I use my phone and social media. I’m still processing the experience and am planning to write about it here.
Wanting… summer jeans or pants. I have a pair of very light weight jeans that I wear pretty frequently in the summer. I probably would not wear jeans in the summer but the pre-cooling I do of the house on summer mornings makes the house unbearable without covering my arms and legs. My summer weight jeans are low wasted and I’m less and less comfortable in them. I ordered some options from Loft and unfortunately none of those are going to work. I think I’ll try these from J. Crew Factory.
