Last week was rough. The vet determined a week before Christmas that Daisy likely had cancer. It was unlikely there was anything they could do, and since she was 12 years old, I didn’t want to put her through a treatment that likely would not extend her life. She bounced back and forth between seeming to not feel so well and her old exuberant self – until last Sunday. For the first time since she was diagnosed, she seemed to be in pain so I made the decision to end her suffering. The house has been so quiet without her.
Watching… Godless. While it takes place in the 1800’s this is kind of a modern take on the classic western. It centers around a community that lost most of its men to a catastrophic mining accident. The women of the community step up and take over. I’m not usually much for westerns but I really enjoyed this one. It was fun to see Michelle Dockery in this role that was quite different from her role as Lady Mary.
Reading… Sourdough. I enjoyed most of this story about sourdough bread and robotics. But at some point it took a turn from quirky to over-the-top sci-fi. I’m all for quirky but not much of a fan of sci-fi; it almost seemed like the first and second halves were written by two different authors.
Listening to… Love Your Work podcast. I’ve been enjoying this new-to-me podcast, especially this episode with B.J. Fogg on developing new habits for the new year. The key: start small (very, very small). I’ve noticed that my successful habit changes, especially dietary changes, have centered around this philosophy. It was interesting to hear this supported by science.
Loving… weighted blanket by Active Corner. I have issues with waking up in the middle of the night and having trouble going back to sleep. This got worse when my tooth infection developed. I’ve researched any and all (non-prescription) sleep aides. I’ve been thinking about getting a weighted blanket for awhile and decided to go for it with this most recent wave of insomnia. While this doesn’t keep me from waking up, I have noticed that I’m no longer feeling as anxious when I wake and have a lot better luck getting back to sleep. I am really pleased with the quality; the fabric used is high quality and the stitching is solid.
Wanting… Dyson V8 Animal Cordless Vacuum. I’ve heard great things about these cordless vacuums and I really want one. While I like my Dyson upright, it doesn’t do such a great job on the stairs and it’s kind of unwieldy to use. I love that this cordless vac can be converted to a handheld to sweep stairs and furniture, plus how awesome would it be to not have to mess with a cord?!? I’ve had great luck with refurbished Dyson vacuums in the past so I would not hesitate to buy a refurbished model.
