I am an avid reader and thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite books and books I have given as gifts.
Almost ten years ago, the Mitford Series was huge, at least it was in my family. It was wholesome yet funny. A couple of years ago I discovered The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society which has a similar feel. This is the kind of book you could give your Grandmother or your best friend. I loved the story and the history. I was not aware of Guernsey and what the island endured during WWII. It’s also told in an original manner, each chapter is a letter either to or from one of the island’s inhabitants. It kind of feels like you’re eavesdropping on a very interesting conversation.
Same Kind of Different As Me is the true story of an unlikely friendship between a homeless drifter and an upscale art dealer. The story is told by both Ron Hall and Denver Moore. At first, I had some trouble reading Denver’s chapters, but once I got used to the vernacular, I really got into the book and flew threw it. There is also a follow-up book that I have not read yet, What Difference Do It Make?. Though at times sad, this book is very inspiring. It left me feeling very thankful for the life I was blessed to be born into.
The Book Thief is possibly my all-time favorite book. It’s the story of a girl and her love for books. Since she is growing up in Germany during World War II, she doesn’t have a lot of access to books and often resorts to stealing them. I won’t reveal anything more than that. This book was marketed towards young adults, so it’s appropriate for mid-high and high schoolers but doesn’t seem like a teen book if you’re an adult.
I don’t know about you but I’ve always thought how cool it would be to restore a dilapidated old house to its former beauty. All the Way Home, a true story, is the story of a man that does just that. Most homeowners have our moments where we think it would be much simpler if we just rented, this book will help you appreciate those moments. This is a great gift for the DIYer in your life.
A Million Miles in a Thousand Years is the story of Donald Miller working with a couple of men to adapt his memoir Blue Like Jazz into a movie. Beyond that, it’s a book that inspires you to live a better story. This book inspires the reader to move beyond what’s comfortable and make a good story of his or her life. I think it’s easy to be influenced by others and what they think you should do. This book helps you focus on the story you want from your life.
These are my top 5 books from the last few years. I think I have given all of them as gifts. Have you read any good books lately?
