A few years ago, after seeing Dr. Oz talk about the neti pot on Oprah, I decided to give it a try. Since then, I have become a big fan. If you suffer from allergies, or have a cold, I recommend trying it. Yes, it seems weird pouring water out of a little watering can into your nose and watching it come out the other side. But it’s worth the initial discomfort.
Before I began using the neti pot, I usually had a sinus infection at least once a year. Being sick would put me out of commission for a few days and I would eventually have to go to the doctor for antibiotics. I have not had a sinus infection since I began using it. It hasn’t cured my seasonal allergies, but I can tell a difference if I stop using it.
You can purchase a salt mix to add to the water, but I find it easier to make my own mix. A former co-worker’s doctor told her she didn’t need to purchase a mix, he told her to add 3 Tablespoons of pickling salt and 3 teaspoons of baking soda to a gallon of distilled water. Before use, I shake the jug and then heat 1 cup of the mixture for 20-30 seconds in the microwave. It’s most comfortable to use if the water is warmer than room temperature but you don’t want the water to be too hot.
If you suffer from allergies and sinus issues, give the neti pot a try and see if it works for you. You may find that it keeps you out of the doctor’s office this allergy season.
